Youth Services:

The Half Hollow Hills Community Library offers programs for all the young people in our community. We have craft programs, story hours, and all sorts of fun every month, so be sure to check the library newsletter or call our Youth Services department at 421-4530 for Dix Hills, and 421-4535 for Melville.You can email us here at Dix Hills, or Melville, too! Programs are restricted to residents of the Half Hollow Hills Library district; please bring your library card when registering. Reference:

The Reference Department provides assistance in information retrieval and in the selection of reading materials based on the patrons interest. The librarians provide instruction in the use of the computerized catalog and other resources in the department. Librarians will help library users locate and reserve materials in the collection or will request materials through Interlibrary loan from libraries in Suffolk County and the around the country. Some of our resources include:

Print Materials

Fiction, Science Fiction, Mystery, Short Story Collection, Classics, English as a Second Language, Books in other languages, Auto Repair Manuals, Sheet Music, Career Books, College and School Information, Travel, Best Sellers and Large Type Books, Local History Collection.

Audio Visual

Fiction and Instructional Videos, Compact Disks, Books-on-tape, Books-on-cd, DVDs, and CD-ROMs.

We also offer many informational databases and specialized collections.

  • BUSINESS - This collection includes book and electronic resources covering all aspects of business information: investment and financial sources, directories of companies worldwide , telephone directories for the United States and Canada , export and import directories, and career and job search information .

  • PERIODICALS- A selection of popular magazines, professional journals, newspapers and newsletters on a broad selection of topics including Foreign language magazines . We have many newspapers and periodicals available on microfilm, including the New York Times from 1899.
  • COMPUTERS- PCs and Internet computers are available for personal use in the Reference Dept. ZOOMTEXT XTRA, called "the total low-vision solution," is available on an Internet computer at both library buildings. This adaptive software program, designed to meet the needs of the visually impaired for fully integrated magnification and speech, not only gives them better access to the Internet and word processing, but can make the computer a more useful tool for beginning readers and people with learning disabilities. A manual of easy to use instructions is provided. See a Reference Librarian to sign you in. The Dix Hills building also has a scanner for public use. You can scan pictures or documents, and email them or save them to a cd-rom.
