The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery is a non-profit educational center. Its mission is to operate as an environmental education center and public aquarium that continues to raise and stock trout. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is the only museum in the nation devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. Fire Island Light was an important landmark for transatlantic ships coming into New York Harbor at the turn of the last century. For many European immigrants, the Fire Island Light was their first sight of land upon arrival in America. Since its inception in1982, the directive of the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS) has been to work with the National Park Service to help preserve the nautical heritage of Fire Island and Long Island, and to ensure that this monument remains an integral part of that heritage.

The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804 as New York’s first museum. Its eleven founders all lived through the turbulent years of the American Revolution and the British occupation of New York. The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site and Interpretive Center offer modern-day visitors to Long Island the opportunity to step back in time and ultimately encounter the life and art of the most powerful poet in world literature, America’s own Walt Whitman. The historic Birthplace still stands peacefully on the same spot where it was built in West Hills, Huntington. The Birthplace and Interpretive Center offer guided tours, museum shop and bookstore, picnic facilities, auto-hiking tours of beautiful and historic West Hills, concerts, lectures, poetry readings and contest, a Poet-in-Residence program and special events. Visitors can delve deeply into Whitman’s life and poetry through a series of engaging exhibits that trace the poet’s development from his boyhood to his international prominence as one of our country’s greatest visionaries.

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum has served three generations of Long Islanders, having opened its doors to the public in 1942. The Whaling Museum is the only facility on Long Island and in New York State open year-round which focuses primarily on the whaling history of the region. Its collection provides the community with a significant link to the understanding of one of Long Island’s earliest major industries- whaling. The collection was formed by the local community who recognized the need for a repository to preserve the region’s local maritime history and Cold Spring Harbor’s whaling past.
